C’Siders was started in September 2016 by Peter Meacham.  He had received a cancer diagnosis and realised there were no general support groups in the Weymouth and Portland area – so he set about finding out if there was a demand for one.  The first meeting saw about 20 people attend and it all went from there.  Membership has grown and experiences have been shared.

A small committee of volunteers was set up to manage the running of the group governed by a constitution.  We have now been recognised as Charitable by HMRC so can collect Gift Aid on any donations.  Supporters can now make donations on-line via our GoldenGiving page.

We found a ‘home’ for our meetings at the Wyke Smugglers pub on Portland Road where we meet on the first and third Mondays of the month at 7:30pm.  We use their back room and can chat over a drink.

Speakers at our meetings have covered a variety of topics relevant to cancer but also some general-interest subjects.  We’ve helped at events, like the Macmillan Mighty Hike, and had some outings.

Some of us have attended cancer rehabilitation exercise sessions which has started us on a path to greater fitness.

So, yes, we’re there to help each other but also to have fun along the way!
